Mother's Union
We continue to meet as a small branch of this worldwide organisation. During the year we were entertained by a variety of speakers, some home grown, some from other areas. One especially moved us all, a talk given by a lady, now in her eighties, who was one of the Jewish children transported out of Germany at the outbreak of the war with her younger brother, they never saw their parents again. On a happier note we thoroughly enjoyed the visit of Betty Brown and her friends who performed with hand puppets songs and stories based on faith in Jesus Christ. Church Cross House was not really big enough for this event, but we managed, not quite sitting on each other’s knees!
We had the story of Thomas a Becket brought to life vividly by Pat Jenner and we look forward to her next visit. We are always grateful to Mary Pownall who we call upon regularly to lead us in prayer and song, and Pat Wilton whose dedication to music and readings prepared us for Easter.
Our Garden Party in August has been held in Church Cross House recently because of the uncertain weather, but with friends we always enjoy a happy afternoon. We had a treat in November when we went to Kenya with Roger and Mary Birchall. The brilliant photos projected on the screen gave us close-ups of Lions, Giraffes, Hippos and exotic birds, just like the Nature programmes.
At the end of the year we begin our Christmas celebrations with a lunch in Church Cross House with friends and this always proves popular, could be it's the delicious puddings! We look forward to another year and meeting together. We meet in Church Cross House on the second Tuesday of the month, details are in the parish magazine and visitors are always made welcome. We have a regular prayer meeting on the Friday before our meeting and it is a time to share together our concerns for family and neighbours and our branches across the world. A reading printed in our Woven in Prayer book reads: 'Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another. Hebrews 10.24-25.
